It’s a grocery store, but it
doesn’t stand alone. It’s an association of producer
members joining together to strengthen their efforts to
produce food and necessities, serving and connecting
with the people who live here in Kitsap County. It’s a
direct link between consumers and producers, for the
benefit of all.
People are eager for fresh, locally
sourced foods because they are noted for high quality
and good nutrition, because people feel secure and
confident when they actually know the people who produce
their food, can visit their farms and talk with them
face to face, and because locally sourced food can give
them freshness that simply can’t be bought any other
way.
Farmers have a tough time in this
country, where typically they receive less than 10% of
dollars spent on food in a regular supermarket. The rest
goes to a series of businesses that handle the food
between the farm and the consumer. Consolidation,
shipping, packaging, refrigeration and storage generally
detract from the quality of food in its fresh state, so
the farmers lose and consumers lose.
FreshLocal joins other pioneering
efforts across the nation, changing the food delivery
system to a local based model, in which community, and
all its members, win. |
